Her father is Irish Catholic, born in Belfast and grew up in County Donegal. He was a French teacher and folk guitarist, but now owns a web design company.
Anna’s mother is a special needs teacher, and her brother Michael is a physician, who did television advertising work for Hovis when he was younger.
Anna attended Crompton House Church of England High School and later attended Holy Cross College. She began training as an actress at Oldham Theatre Workshop.

What movies and TV shows has Anna Friel been in?
Anna is set to star in the upcoming movie Sulphur and White. It's based on David Tait's life story - when he was a child he was abused by his dad and although his mum witnessed it she did nothing to stop it. Anna will take on the role of his mum in the film.
You might also recognise the actress as Beth Jordache from Brookside, where she made headlines for the first lesbian kiss on a British soap. Anna also won the NTA in 1995 for Most Popular Actress for her role in the soap.
She also played Charlotte in Pushing Daisies, where Anna was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2008 in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical category. However, Pushing Daisies was cancelled after two seasons due to poor ratings.
Anna also starred in the movie Land of the Lost alongside Will Ferrell and in Limitless alongside Bradley Cooper.
