Speaking to viewers on Monday morning, Amanda revealed that her sister Debbie is currently stranded on Mount Everest after the Nepal earthquake triggered an avalanche.
‘I’m still quite numb’ said the mum-of-two, who said her sister has managed to get in touch with the family to tell them she is alive.
But the situation could have all too easily been a tragic one, as Amanda reveals her sister should have been at base camp, but wasn’t due to altitude sickness.
Base camp was hit by an avalanche on Saturday triggered by an earthquake, this caused the deaths of 18 climbers and dozens more were injured on the mountain.
Explaining the situation, Amanda told viewers: ‘My sister was suffering from altitude sickness so she didn’t go up to base camp. That may have saved her life.’
She added that her sister was in a small group of four on the side of the mountain, but has not been picked up yet as she wasn’t injured - therefore not a priority.
Fears are growing for climbers left on the mountainside, most of whom only have enough supplies to last them another 24 hours. One climber, Mr Grieve, from Scotland, said: 'rescue teams are struggling to get us help due to the weather and the next few days' forecasts are not great.'
'We are in a race against time to get off the mountain.'
