Alex Jones has opened up about fertility and her fears about starting a family later in life.
The host of The One Show, 39, was speaking at a Fertility Health Summit at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London when she admitted that she did not realise her age could cause problems.
According to reports Alex said: "As most girls I spent all of my teenage years, twenties, thirties, doing everything I could to avoid getting pregnant and then it's just like Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart - a day arrives and then you go 'gosh, maybe we should have a baby'."
She then said that until she married her husband Charlie Thompson in December last year, she had not considered potential complications.
Revealing that it took a while for the reality of her age to sink in she said: ”For me the penny didn't drop. I thought, I've just met this boy, I've got this lovely job, that I absolutely, to this day, adore, although it's not more important than a family - I'd like to be really clear about that.”
Jones also said she’s keen to distance herself from the "career girl" label, explaining: "I just happen to have a career and, while you're waiting for a family, why wouldn't you try your best and do the job to the best of your advantage?"
Alex and Charlie married on New Year’s Eve last year and apparently the pressure to start a family begun almost immediately for the pair.
"We got married and less than two days later the first person said 'So, when are you going to have a baby?' It's a very personal question,” said Alex.
"Women should support women and we all know it can be difficult. It just puts more and more pressure on us.”
Alex has been very involved in the topic of fertility and will be seen in BBC documentary The Truth About Fertility later this year.
