When it comes to makeup looks, it is very easy to get overwhelmed with all the tips and tricks which we are inundated with.

However, one trick to master is how to apply concealer in the best way to maximise the results.

Concealer for those that don’t know is a pigmented formula which should be colour-matched to your skin tone to cover up any unwanted sights. From covering dark circles to disguising those very unwanted blemishes, this product is one product that will always have your back.

Founder of GlowHub, Tiffany says "Concealing is an important part of a make-up routine when you are looking to hide dark circles, spots, blemishes and more. Concealer hides pigments and blends imperfections in with the skin and can be a great help when wanting to brighten up your look."

How to choose the right shade:

Before getting started with applying, you obviously need to choose the right shade, and this can be tricky. One of the best ways which we have always followed is but placing a tiny bit of the product on the back of your hand and blending it in my patting it into the skin, if it fades then it’s a match.

However, if it stands out and you can visibly still see it then you need to opt for a darker or lighter shade.

Rose Gallagher, Brand Ambassador for IT Cosmetics says: “Always go for the most simple option for example lots of brands including IT Cosmetics will categorise their shades into a shade family and then have lots of variations within that family so you might have light cool, light medium, light warm. Try to go for the parent shade or neutral undertone if you’re not sure.

Whereas Samantha Kendrew, Head Educator at Mii Cosmetics says **“**You always want to go 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation to give a brightening effect.”

How to apply:

Where to apply concealer is an often-asked question and the short answer is, anywhere that needs to be covered. That can be dark circles under your eyes, uneven skin tone, blemishes and dare we say, spots.

Besides under the eyes and over the skin, you can also use concealer to contour by placing it along the nows, on the chin and forehead to capture the light.

Tiffany says "We recommend using an applicator or brush to apply your foundation and then blending in with a beauty sponge or clean finger. Once applied to the skin we recommend leaving the concealer to sit and warm up on your face for at least 30 seconds to ensure full coverage and long-lasting wear."

Applying for blemishes

When it comes to covering any blemishes or dark spots, we suggest blending two tones of concealer, one that is a match and one that is a shade lighter, this will then create a perfect covering formula.

Apply a small amount over the area and leave to set for 10 seconds, then with a small brush, work it into the skin and around the area so that it effortlessly blends away.

Another top tip is to go over the area with a small amount of setting powder so that it dries the area and then finish off with another application of powder to set it in place.

Applying to under eyes

How to apply concealer under eyes could not be easier. All you need for this is simple your chose shade of concealer and a colour corrector. These might look scary as they usually come in an orange for light skin and reds for darker skin tones, but they are brilliant to blend with concealer to even out the colour difference.

TikTok user @Isabellrrose demonstrates the best way to do this by applying a small amount of colour correct to the inside of the eye and drawing it down to the base of the eye socket, then along the outer edge of the eye.

She then blends these together before doing the same with a light concealer to balance out the two products.

A top tip is not to go too close to the eye as you may find the products will sink into the creases around the eye.

When to apply under-eye concealer:

Samantha says “If you are colour correcting, always do this under your foundation, it will even out the tone of the skin, you can then use a brightening concealer on top of your foundation for under the eyes and then set with a powder. Always ensure you are using powders on top of liquids to set them.”

Tiffany leads on from this saying: “Underpainting is a huge trend on TikTok right now, which is basically putting your concealer, contour and blush under your foundation. The reason for this? It achieves a very natural, blended makeup look.

However, if you prefer to use concealer the more traditional way, because of its natural skin-like finish it works amazingly over foundation too, which I like to do for under eyes, as it tends to mean you use less product.”

So the next time you’re getting your face ready for the day or a special event bear these useful tips in mind to not only get a flawless finish but to have the product lasting you all day long.
