Start with a clean canvas

'Good skincare is the best starting point for make-up'

‘Good skincare is the best starting point for make-up, and if you take care of your skin you can wear less foundation. I spend a lot more time on my skincare regime than on anything else.

‘I'm scrupulous about taking off my make-up before I go to bed - I use a hot flannel or a soft piece of linen to remove my Gentle Cream Cleanser by MV Organic (£32, cultbeauty.co.uk) - and moisturising properly.

‘If I've been on a film set and they've put a lot of make-up on me, I take extra care cleansing. I'm obsessive about sunscreens, too: a minimum of SPF 15 is a must every day.’

Beware of bronzer

'A pinky blusher is much nicer'

‘It can sometimes look too cakey, especially if you're really pale like me. A pinky blusher is much nicer: it gives you a lovely glow and subtle flush. Pink instantly makes you look healthier, without looking as though you've just plastered yourself with make-up. I love Stila's Convertible Colour in Fuchsia (£16, stila.co.uk).

‘My skin is quite sensitive, so I prefer to avoid wearing too much on my face. It's far better to look natural.’

The power of lippy

'For daytime I like to wear a pink-tinted lip-balm'

‘I have always really loved make-up. I grew up around make-up artists - they were my surrogate mothers - so I have learnt a lot from them, such as the impact that lipstick can have. However, I usually save it for evenings. For daytime I like to wear a pink-tinted lip-balm such as Figs & Rouge's Lemon Berry (£4.95, feelunique.com).

‘It looks effortless. Wearing something tinted is much more glamorous than just putting on any old lip-balm. I've always enjoyed doing my own make-up, and I still often do it for events. I do my friends' make-up a lot, too.’

Brighten up

'Pick one colour to base your make-up on'

‘An easy way to look more interesting is to pick one colour to base your make-up on. People are intimidated by the idea of wearing several tones of the same colour, either with their clothes or with their make-up, but it's really simple and looks very effective.

‘I love bright pops of the same colour on my lips and nails; they add interest to an outfit. I wear Lancôme's Rouge In Love lipstick (£21, lancome.co.uk) with its Vernis In Love nail polish (£12, selfridges.com).’

Be yourself

'Be careful you don't end up looking like someone else'

‘The funny thing about beauty is that you have to be careful you don't end up looking like someone else, especially in the film industry. I've noticed that throughout people's careers everyone gradually begins to look more and more alike.

‘I admire French actresses because on the red carpet they look human - they aren't blow-dried and made-up to the point of resembling robots - and they tend to look individual. That's the best thing about beauty: you can experiment with lots of colours and effects to find what works for you.’
