Recently Michelle Keegan shocked fans with her dramatic change in hair colour, going from the gorgeous brunette we all know and love, to a sultry blonde.

Although Michelle’s shock hair transformation was for work purposes, we couldn’t help but think changing up your look made a great idea for summer festivals and holidays.

We got in touch with Vernon Deysel, Creative Colour Director at the Paul Edmonds London salon, who was the one in charge of Michelle’s locks, to understand what you need to consider when deciding to change your hair colour completely.

For Michelle, Vernon was asked to take Michelle from a dark brown to a 1960’s / 70’s inspired all over cool blonde for her role as Tina in new drama Bobby & Tina, and it was quite the process:

**Day One: **

Vernon started by removing the brown tint from her hair using low volumes of pre-lightener to gently lift the hair colour for a less yellow look, without distressing the hair molecule.

**Day Two: **

Vernon carried out highlights and applied a moisturising Fusio Dose hair treatment by Kérastase along with a Smartbond product by L’Oreal Professional to mitigate the oxidation process to restore Michelle’s hair. This treats the hair in order to take the colour.

Michelle continued to use the intense moisture at-home products to maintain her glossy, healthy hair; these were: Bain Chroma Riche Shampoo & Conditioner by Kérastase, Rescue Remedy by Shu Uemura and Colour Lustre in Cool Blonde by Shu Uemura enriched with linseed oil to hydrate her hair.

The idea of her colour change was to ensure Michelle’s hair was kept in optimum condition so she can easily go back to her original brunette shade at a later date.

So what does this mean for you if you’re thinking about changing your hair colour for a short amount of time?

Vernon says: “Colour is no longer about static all over colour but instead is an intelligent application of layered stratified colours placed on panels and balayage pieces to add further depth and dimension.”

The trending colours right now are grey and metallic, but Vernon says you don’t necessarily have to use permanent colours, instead you can spray on metallic hair colour and incorporate copper, silver and gold foils using the Techni Art range and Shu Uemura Liquid Fabric for a youthful and fun festival / summer holiday look.

Or if you fancy a quick fix for a weekend, chalk hair is really in right now too. It’s the ideal way to add a touch of boho to your appearance, and why not add in some soft feathers too!

Vernon explains: “Chalk comes in varying base colours of green, blue, red, pink, purple, browns, bronze and black. These can be painted in sections giving you pastel highlights to your hair and look great on brunettes and blondes.”

A full head of ammonia free pre-lightener with Vernon at Paul Edmonds London salon starts from £200.
