The dip dye, balayage, and ombre hair effects are showing no signs of dying down – Katy Perry recently paraded her power locks with hints of blonde at the tips but everyone from Khloe Kardashian to Kate Moss has tried out this look.
This low-maintenance style is perfect for girls who don’t want to regularly head to the salon for root touch ups and you can do it yourself at home.
Stylist at Vixen & Blush Sarah shares her top tips to mastering this look at home.
-
Start with your hair in it’s usual parting.
-
On dry hair, lightly back comb the hair from the mid section of your hair up to your crown using a wide tooth comb or a soft bristle brush. This is essential to making your dip dye a beautifully soft graduated colour.
-
Take your time to back comb your hair carefully for this process as the more back combing, the softer the transition of colour will be from roots to ends.
-
Apply the colour to the mid lengths and ends and wrap them in foil to encourage the hair to change colour evenly. Be careful when attempting to lighten hair that has already been dyed blonde as this could cause damage. If unsure, take a small sample of your hair and do a test piece first.
-
Follow the instructions on the hair dye packet to see how long it takes Observe the development time exactly according to the instructions. Once the development time has been reached wash your hair with shampoo and condition.
-
When lightening hair, warmer tones can be exposed, so it's a good idea to use an Ash toner afterwards to achieve salon results.
