The Pueblo County woman, who has not yet been named, passed away after contracting the bubonic plague this year.

It is thought that the disease was spread by fleas from a dead animal, this being the second death from the illness in the state of Colorado this year.

But it may come as a surprise that on average there are 7 deaths from the Plague every year in America - despite it being associated with a long time past.

Earlier this year a 16-year-old from Larimer County died of septicaemic plague, which wasn’t diagnosed until after he passed away.

Bubonic plague is the most common form of the disease and is an infection spread through the body’s tissue into the lymphatic system.

All types of the illness can be treated if caught early enough.
