Despite his wife knowing when he was due back, Sgt Martel decided to keep it a secret from his son, so that he could surprise him at his football game.

Dressed in the uniform of the other team, Joseph watched his son play out most of the game before the referee called a meeting to discuss sportsmanship - an excuse for Joseph to make it onto the field.

Taking off his helmet to reveal his face, Joseph's son Justin stares blankly in shock before bursting into tears and embracing his father.

Justin's father is seen watching the game from the sidelines

His team mates are heard whooping and cheering in the background as the two remain embraced.

'I thought he was, I don't even know how many miles [away] and the next thing you know he's standing in front of me and giving me a hug,' said the overcome Justin.

An exhausted MSgt Martel said he was tired but looking forward to now spending some quality time with his family.
