The mudslide in San Pedro in Guatemala, caused by days of heavy rain, sadly claimed the lives of 50 people and caused huge damage when it happened at the end of last month.

It was so bad that the government there were forced to send out military officers to search for survivors. We bet they weren’t expecting to find what they did.

This video shows the bittersweet moment rescuers discovered that, miraculously, a dog had managed to stay alive despite being completely covered for all of that time.

Cleverly, the dog, nicknamed by rescuers as el Afortunado, which translates as the lucky one, kept barking and yelping until he was found.

One of the men who found him said: “We dug and dug, and sweated and slaved, and as we got closer, we realised it was the barking of a dog.

“When we broke through to where he was, he jumped into our arms and licked our faces. Unfortunately, there was no one left alive in the rubble with him, but we took him to safety.”
