The common STI, which can be transmitted through oral, anal and vaginal sex, has become resistant to the drugs usually used to treat it.

First reported in Leeds in March, the new strain cannot be treated with azithromycin (the usual drug used to clear up the disease), causing medical professionals to panic.

Cases have now been reported elsewhere in the north, including Macclesfield, Oldham and Scunthorpe.

To make matters worse, many of those infected have partners elsewhere in the country, meaning the resistant infection could have spread even further.

A national alert has been issued due to the outbreak, with experts now working to understand the new strain of the disease.
