The babies have fallen ill following the death of one newborn at Guys and St Thomas’ hospital in London.

The baby has been named as 9-day-old Yousef Al-Kharboush.

A coroner at Southwark has released a statement regarding the tragic death, reading: An investigation was opened as he has reason to suspect that the deceased died an unnatural death.

The coroner will decide at this meeting whether an autopsy is required and the initial steps to be taken.

The three new cases have been reported at Peterborough City Hospital in Cambridgeshire, Southend University Hospital and Basildon University Hospital, both in Essex.

A spokesperson from Public Health England said in statement: ‘We are confident remaining stock is not being used in hospitals.’

The managing director of the company that makes the drips spoke outside the company’s London base.

She said: ‘From investigations carried out so far, it would appear the potential contamination is linked to a single sourced raw material ingredient.’

‘As a mother, as a pharmacist , as someone who has worked for 30 years in health care, inside and outside the NHS, I am deeply saddened that one baby has died and 14 others have fallen ill from septicaemia.’

She continued: ‘We have instituted a recall of the limited number of batches which could potentially have been affected and all stock has been removed from circulation.’

‘Given this action, there is no reason for patients, their families or health care professionals to be concerned.’
