Storm Katie: Flights from London have been cancelled

Gusts of up to 105mph from Storm Katie have been battering England and Wales, causing flights to be diverted from airports.

Gatwick-bound flights have been delayed, diverted and cancelled today due to the adverse weather.

A warning on the airport’s website warns customers that they are “experiencing some disruption to flights and on roads around Gatwick”.

Heathrow airport is also reporting delays and cancellations to some flights due to the storm.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for London and the South East of England and a yellow warning for East Midlands, East of England, South West England, Wales, West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber.

They have also issued 26 flood warnings in England, and according to UK Power Networks, “High winds have caused damage to parts of the South East electricity network”.

Highways England have also reported disruption to the Dartford River Crossing, M48 Severn Bridge and the Sheppey Crossing, as well as warning road users to check the weather forecast and road conditions before they travel today due to the weather.

London Fire Brigade has also taken to Twitter to share incidents they have attended cause by Storm Katie: “Firefighters & 999 control officers have worked tirelessly to deal with 110+ #StormKatie incidents since midnight.”

BBC weather forecaster has said: "It won't be until Easter Monday afternoon that things gradually improve across parts of eastern England.

"It is particularly southern parts of England bearing the brunt of Storm Katie but also into parts of East Anglia as well, with these potentially damaging and disruptive gusts of wind of 60 to 70mph - but possibly more in the most exposed areas.”
