The ‘beast from the east’ winds will see some parts of the UK plummet to a frosty -11C, while sub-zero temperatures will prevail throughout.

Snow in the Lake District this week

This icy blast is due to a 4,000 mile wide plume of -15C air coming from northern Russia.

London also got a sprinkling of snow

Commuters from across the country took to social media to express their joy and dismay at the snowfall this morning; keeping friends and family updated with their treacherous journeys to work.

Twitter user Andrew said: ‘Snowing in London. Looks very pretty. Will we get the usual travel chaos?’

Another joked at the over-the-top reaction of some Brits, writing: ‘Prepare for the Snowpocalypse! And for the Scandinavians and Canadians to shake their heads at the SNOW CHAOS.’
