But department store Selfridges has come under fire after it refused to deliver a designer bag to an address in Brixton as they classed it as a ‘risky’ postcode.
Layla Daswani, 22, ordered the £450 Mulberry bag online from the famous store, as a gift for her flatmate’s 30th birthday.
But she was told the next day that they would not be delivering it to her flat in Brixton, South London because she ‘didn’t meet validation requirements’.
Layla works as a corporate finance consultant for an assets management company and lives in a £500,000 property in Brixton. Selfridges followed up their email with another to tell Layla she lives in a ‘risky’ postcode.
Speaking to the MailOnline, Layla said: “I immediately rang my bank to see if there was a problem with the money coming out but was told Selfridges had taken the cash without a problem so I called customer services.
“It’s absolutely ridiculous – I live in a brand new £500,000 flat in a swanky apartment block in the highest council tax bracket in London and I can afford to buy a Mulberry bag as a gift.
“I have no issue parking my brand new Audi outside my flat and I’d happily walk around where I live with a Mulberry bag, I just can’t get one delivered.”
Layla took to Twitter today to defend going public with Selfridges refusal to deliver to her address. She wrote: “The whole idea of this was to prove that no matter if you live in a council estate or a mansion no one should be discriminated.”
Following the complaint, the store apologised to Layla and also posted a message to Twitter: “On this occasion disparity between delivery and billing addresses led to a misunderstanding. The bag was delivered Weds AM.”
