It’s called a El Nino and, if it does happen it will be the first cycle of such weather for five years.

Britain could be battered by treacherous snowstorms and temperatures below freezing next winter.

It’s thought the El Nino could be triggered by changes in the Pacific Ocean which all sounds a bit apocalyptic, doesn’t it?

During the last cycle the UK plummeted to the coldest temperatures for 120 years.

In 2010 Southeast Asia suffered monsoons, blizzards battered America and there were droughts in the Philippines and southern Australia.

“There’s always a bit of doubt when it comes to intensity forecasts,” David Jones of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said.

“But across the modules as a whole we’d suggest that this will be quite a substantial El Nino event.

“Certainly the models aren’t predicting a weak event. They are predicting a moderate-to-strong El Nino event. So this is a proper El Nino event, this is not a weak one or a near miss as we saw last year.”
