The cartoon voice actress died on December 22 at her home in Utah.
According to the actress’s sister Deionn Masock, the cause of death is not yet known.
In a statement, her family said: "She was able to do incredible and amazing things with her voice and bring lots of smiles and many laughs to many people.”
Cavanaugh’s family announced her death in the Los Angeles Times, writing: "Her imagination, humour and intelligence were evident to anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her.
"Many know of her from the roles she played, but in each role there was a part of her showing through that the ones who truly knew her could see."
Along with working on children’s cartoon Rugrats for over a decade, Cavanaugh also voiced the character of Babe in the hit family film as well as Dexter in Cartoon Network’s Dexter’s Laboratory.
She retired from acting in 2001 and moved to Utah to be nearer to her loved ones.
