On April 15, 1989, overcrowding in one of the front pens of the Sheffield Wednesday ground caused a mass crush that resulted in 96 fatalities and hundreds of injuries.

Coleen Rooney, whose husband Wayne plays for Manchester United, tweeted the heartfelt message: 'Thinking of all their family and friends today and always.'

Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard took to Instagram to share a snap of the memorial to the 96 victims of the disaster.

This year’s anniversary comes just a month after policeman David Duckenfield, who was in charge of the match between Liverpool and Nottingham that day, finally admitted that his failure to control the crowd ‘was the direct cause of the deaths of 96 people.’

Duckenfield, now 70, famously denied any wrongdoing on the match day, blaming Liverpool fans for being drunk and unruly.

He has since issued an apology to the victims’ families, who have campaigned relentlessly for the truth about the tragedy.
