This story about true loyalty is like something out of a Disney movie, except it happened in real life on the west coast of the US.

Golden retriever Tillie and Phoebe, a basset hound, went out on a walk together near their home in Washington, USA.

When the pair failed to return back, their worried owner started searching for them to no avail.

He decided to contact a volunteer for Vashon Island Pet Protectors to aid his search and looked for the dogs for days.

The dogs remained nowhere to be seen.

Unbeknownst to the dogs’ owner and his search partner, Phoebe had fallen into a deep cistern in a ravine several miles away. She was unable to climb out without help.

Luckily for Phoebe, her clever friend Tillie decided to search for someone nearby.

Tillie had approached a farmer before running back to the ravine, and searcher Amy Carey decided to investigate further.

Poor Phoebe was trapped down the cistern (Vashon Island Pet Protectors)

She told news site The Dodo: "We didn't know where they were going to be.

“They were miles away from the place they had been seen before. It was Tillie going very pointedly up to this person in their pasture, letting herself be seen, and running back to Phoebe- that's why we found them. It's really amazing."

Tillie was found standing guard as Phoebe remained in the cistern, thankfully both dogs were alive and unhurt.

Hero of the week, Tillie (Vashon Island Pet Protectors)

"Once they got out, they were happy as clams. Tillie was so relieved. When the owner came to get them, they heard his voice in the distance, you could just see their relief. They just started wiggling their tails.

"It was very touching, but in a way not surprising given what we know about dogs as loyal friends. We were just so very grateful to find them safe."

Proof that dogs really ARE the most loyal companions.
