According to a police report, the 27-year-old’s husband, Michael Ruiz, found her on the bed, pointing a gun at her stomach.
He told police that he tried to get the gun away, but it went off, shooting her in the stomach and injuring his hand.
A neighbour who heard the disturbance told WESH-TV: “Just, like, bang, like really loud, like something exploded.”
The baby boy died during an emergency C-section, and his parents are still recovering from their own injuries.
Amanda Ruiz told police that she thought the gun was unloaded, and that she had only been pointing it at her stomach to make her husband angry.
Neighbours claimed to the TV station that the couple were often involved in domestic disputes.
One said: "I never saw anything physical, but we had to ask them to keep it down a few times because they reached all the way over here to our apartment.”
Ruiz is charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, because she had a prior conviction.
It remains to be seen whether or not she will be charged for the death of her unborn baby.
“Whether there will be additional charges will be determined after a complete investigation's done,” prosecutor Gary Beatty told WESH-TV.
