An Israeli airstrike, that their military claimed was targeting Hamas weapon-making facilities, has killed a pregnant Palestinian woman and her young daughter in Gaza.

Ashraf al-Qidra, a Gaza Health Ministry spokesman, said that the woman, Noor Hassan, was aged 30 and five months pregnant.

Her daughter was just three-years-old.

Four other people — including the woman's husband and son — were wounded in the explosion, which took place in one of the Hamas camps in Gaza City.

The Israeli Defence Force have since confirmed that they launched the aistrike in an act of retaliation.

They insist that they only targeted Hamas weapons manufacturing facilities because the Palestinians had fired rockets into Southern Israel.

The Israeli military "holds Hamas responsible for any act of aggression from the Gaza Strip,” said army spokesman Lt Col Peter Lerner.

The attack came on the same day a 31-year-old Palestinian woman set off an explosion at a checkpoint in the West Bank.

She reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) before the device went off, and was critically injured in the blast.

An Israeli police officer was also wounded.

The increase in violence has spurred talk from Hamas of a new Palestinian uprising.

"We warn the occupation against continuing this foolishness,” a Hamas spokesman said.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 24 Palestinians, including four children, have been killed in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip since 1st October 2015.

Over 1,300 Palestinians have also been injured in this short 12 day period.

Meanwhile, several people were stabbed in Northern Israel by a Palestinian citizen of Israel, who was later arrested.
