After eight months of legal wrangling, and five days of sentencing mitigation this week, the Judge announced she will return at 9.30AM next week to hand down Oscar’s punishment.

Barry Roux for the defence took to the stand first to give his closing argument, referring to the fact that Pistorius has already suffered plenty, having lost a loved one, and having to come face-to-face with his actions every day.

‘I’m sure every right thinking person would agree that there can be nothing worse than being home and hearing [your] child has died violently.’

He added that the Paralympian will not recover from an event he ‘blames himself’ for, and that he has already been punished ‘morally over and over again.’ For these reasons, he urged the judge to give Oscar a non-custodial sentence.

Roux commented that Pistorius is not a danger to society, and that his charity work and future contribution to the community should be a factor held in consideration when deciding his punishment.

Gerrie Nel for the prosecution, has in contrast urged the Judge to think of the severity of Pistorius’s actions.

‘I’m sure every right thinking person would agree that there can be nothing worse than being home and hearing [your] child has died violently.’

He added that at the end of the day, killing another human being is the most serious thing you can do, and that people who commit fraud and other offences still receive prison time.

Nel urged the judge to give Pistorius a 10 year prison sentence - both for the severity of the offence, but also to keep the public's faith in the justice system. This statement led to gasps of 'oh my God' from Pistorius's family.

Gerrie Nel also referenced the type of ammunition Pistorius used to shoot Reeva with - the 'devastatingly damaging black talon ammunition.' As he discussed this point, Pistorius looked up and could be seen shaking his head.

As everyone exited court, Pistorius could be seen sitting with his head in his hands.

Closer Online will live stream the sentence on Tuesday at 8.30AM UK time.
