The little girl was born at 24 weeks, and is believed to be amongst the youngest in the country to survive such a premature birth.
Emily weighed just 1lb 2oz when she was born on February 27th, and could have been legally aborted.
However the pictures showing the little girl’s recovery- her weight has almost doubled in the last month- have hit home for some mothers.
While Scottish Claire says her daughter was initially so tiny she could fit in the palm of her hands, the first 10 minute cuddle was stretched to 20 minutes as little Emily responded so well to her mother’s touch.
Claire, 34, revealed:
“I cried before the nurse brought her out, it was so emotional, I’ve never experienced anything like it before. She snuggled up to my chest and fell asleep.”
Meanwhile the story has caused a renewed backlash over the limit of abortion laws.
Currently you can legally have an abortion until you are 24 weeks pregnant, something which outraged many mothers following the pictures of the 24 week old infant.
One Facebook user said:
“Scary that when the baby was born, it could have been aborted at that age , they need to change the abortion laws, its evil.”
With another adding:
“If that doesn't say lower the gestation for legal abortion nothing will.”
The Abortion Act 1967 was reviewed in parliament in 2008, when a debate was held over whether the limit should be reduced from 24 to either 22 or 20 weeks but no changes were made.
