In September, the Paralympic athlete was convicted of Culpable Homicide, after shooting dead his 29-year-old girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on 14 February 2013.

And this morning Oscar has arrived back in court in Pretoria, South Africa - as the world waits to hear his punishment.

The initial charge of premeditated murder was struck down, after Judge Thokozile Masipa explained: 'The state has not proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder. There are just not enough facts to support such finding.'

Masipa also said Pistorius's story that he 'mistook Reeva for an intruder' was a feasible explanation for the shooting, but that the athlete had still acted negligently on the night of her death.

In South African law, there is no minimum sentence for Culpable Homicide, with there being precedent for individuals who have shot loved ones accidentally being given a non-custodial sentence.

He could receive up to 15 years in jail, or a hefty fine, depending on what the Judge thinks is appropriate.

However, many have argued that for Pistorius to receive no prison time at all would cause a public outcry - both from women's refuge groups, and from race equality campaigners.

Indeed, the latter could quite easily argue that, twenty years after apartheid ended, wealthy white South Africans are still regarded as above the law.

A spokesperson for Women's League said: 'At the end of the day a young lady was killed and someone should pay for it.'

The opinion of respected legal professionals in South Africa is that Pistorius will do prison time, but not very long.

Sentencing could take several days, as the court hear final arguments from both sides.

This morning, prosecutor Gerrie Nel has been struggling to cross examine Pistorius's trauma counsellor, who claimed she had no knowledge of the nature of the relationship between the athlete and his girlfriend.
