Devon Berryann recently uploaded a Facebook post along with a photo of her six-year-old son and has received over 20,000 shares.
In the post she explains how her son was teased at school because he likes to wear nail polish.
Devon wrote that her son likes to wear girls clothes and tutus and when describing him she wrote: “He has a light about him that just can’t be put out, no matter how hard some people have tried.”
After her son told her about being teased at school she wrote in the post: “…for the first time ever I considered talking him into taking it off. Into hiding that part of himself.
“Because for the first time ever I was scared that he would be gunned down one night when he was out having a good time with his friends.”
Although Devon struggled with what to do, she decided that she would continue to let him be who he is, “because it makes him happy”. She continued by writing: “because pretending to be someone you’re not to please other people only leads to self-loathing. To depression and to suicide”.
Devon then encouraged everyone reading the post to help change the world we live in. “As scared as I am, I know that this is not going to change with more fear. It has plenty on that.
What it needs is more love and acceptance… Help us change the world into one that deserves him”.
