Sandy Nguyen raised more the $25,000 in a fundraising scam where she claimed her 6-year-old son was seriously ill.

The 28-year-old was arrested on March 13 for the fraud, after raising thousands of dollars from donations at Rolling Hill Elementary School.

She had already used some of the money to fund a trip to Disneyland.

Sandy posted these updates on a fundraising site

Speaking on behalf of the Arapahoe Police Force, Captain Larry Etheridge said: 'We don't have any reason to believe that anyone other than her knew the truth.'

He added: 'The little boy believed he had cancer. The rest of the family believed he had cancer.'

Friend of the family Jordan Miller, who had helped with the fundraising effort, said she felt physically sick when she discovered the hoax.

'Not only did she scam us out of money, and hurt us, but she hurt that boy,' said Miller.

Nguyen announced on a fundraising website in June 2013 that her son had been diagnosed with an 'aggressive, rare, stage 3 childhood bone cancer and Acute Myelogenous Leukemia.'

She then documented several trips to the hospital and the ups and downs of her son's treatment.

Shockingly, in her Facebook pictures her son also sported a bald head - thought to be an attempt to make him appear as if he was receiving treatment.

Rolling Hills Elementary School reached out to parents to ask them to be compassionate to the child in the case - who was a victim and led to believe he was ill too.

Nguyen has been released on bail.
