Maha Al Musa stopped breastfeeding sons Kailash, 16, and Tariq, 13, at the age of two, but decided to extend that period with her daughter.

The mother-of-three, who admits she gets a mixed reaction when breastfeeding her 5-year-old in public, explained:

‘Aminah took to breastfeeding easily and the moment I felt that bond, I was instantly hooked.’

And Maha, a professional belly dancer, plans to let her daughter suckle until she’s 10, if that's what she wants.

‘I believe it helps boost her immune system. To this day, she is very rarely ill and her temperament is calmer and more relaxed than the other children,' she added.

Maha’s public declaration comes after 26-year-old American mum Jamie Lynne Grumet caused controversy by posing on the cover of a magazine, suckling her 4-year-old son as he stands on a chair.

Speaking about her decision to publicise her extended nursing period, the mother, who was herself breastfed until the age of 6, said:

‘We knew exactly what we were going to get into.

'I felt like our family was one of the better ones to handle this because of my mom's own personal breastfeeding.'
