The news was revealed after Mr Chen underwent a CT scan, which showed he had ovaries and a uterus.
Confused by their findings, the doctors then performed a chromosome examination which showed that Mr Chen has XX female sex chromosomes.
The medical professionals then discovered that the man lacked an adam's apple or male genitalia.
A spokesperson for the hospital said: 'He was wearing men's clothes and had short hair so we didn't think that he would be a female at the beginning.'
The man had also claimed that he had had sex with his wife - although doctors now suspect this was a lie.
