The 37-year-old, who is known simply as "Rob" (to protect his identity), had become worried after finding blood in his urine.
Knowing this to be a possible sign of bladder cancer, he went to his doctor seeking medical help.
But he could never have prepared himself for what doctors were about to tell him…
"I hope any other man with similar symptoms will get checked out"
According to The National Post, the medical examination revealed that Rob has fully functioning female reproductive organs.
Speaking about it with reporters, Rob said: "The diagnosis came as a bombshell.
"I've never seen myself as anything but an ordinary bloke who has a normal sex life."
He added: "It appears I could even potentially get pregnant."
The blood that Rob saw in his urine, which he reported having experienced since his late teens, wasn't a sign of cancer. It was just his period.
Rob - who has now been diagnosed as having persistent Müllerian duct syndrome, or PMDS - now plans to have a hysterectomy, which he said could cause him to experience menopause.
And, while it is very rare for men to be diagnosed so late in life (symptoms are usually detected during puberty), Rob hopes that others like him will see his story and take note.
"I hope any other man with similar symptoms will get checked out," Rob said.
