The unlikely passenger was snapped by Isvett Verde, who said that the empty carriage “smelled extremely fishy” when she boarded at 8th Street.
Once notified, the conductor asked passengers to leave the carriage and the train continued to the end of the line, where a supervisor disposed of the shark.
“It’s hard to be surprised as there are always crazy things happening in this city, but even that was a bit much” said Verde, who lives in Brooklyn, New York.
The origin of the shark is still unknown.
Pictures of the shark, including one with a cigarette in its mouth next to a fare card and a can of energy drink, have since gone viral.
This isn’t the first time something strange has been discovered on public transport.
As the London Tube celebrated its 150 year anniversary back in January, it revealed a selection of the strangest objects lost and found on its service.

Amongst them were two human skulls, a stuffed puffer fish and an unusual amount of false teeth.
Only last month a kitten was found in a box on an Underground train at Victoria, Central London.
