ITV News’s political editor Tom Bradby has shared on Twitter his dismay when authorities failed to save a man from drowning in Greece.

The dad-of-three was on holiday in Greece with his family when he saw an elderly man allegedly deliberately drive his car into water.

The brave newsreader ‘dived in’ to try and save the allegedly suicidal man whilst several customs officials stood by idle.

Tom claimed that ‘only one’ of the officials tried to help the pensioner.

Taking to Twitter, the journalist wrote: “Just watched an elderly man commit suicide in Greece by driving his car off the harbour wall in Rafina.”

“Dived in, tried to help, couldn't get him out. Completely shocking.

“Of the 9 or 10 customs officials and police on the quay only 1 went in to try and get him out as the car sank. The rest watched. Jesus...

He then added: “Am shaking with shock and anger. So much for the Greek holiday trade being business as usual.”

Sadly, the man passed away despite Tom’s bid to save him.

Mental illness is becoming an increasing problem in Greece due to the countries ongoing financial problems, with unemployment rising and more people finding themselves in financial difficulty.
