British-born Mark McElliogott, 35, was at Ebelsberg station in Linz, Austria, when the fatal accident occurred.

His wife- who he now lives with in Austria- was about to catch a train with their 18-month-old daughter, Lilly.

Speaking to the Liverpool ECHO, Mark said: “It was basically a load of chance incidents which led to it happening.

“I had just bought a new car which was automatic instead of manual and my wife didn’t feel comfortable driving it so she decided to take the train into town.

“Lilly was a typical little girl and wanted to test everything but she was perfectly fine that day and jumped into the buggy no problem and my wife went to the tram stop.

“She only had a 20 Euro note and she had tried to put it in the machine but they had no change.

"She asked a 17-year-old lad on the platform if he had any but he didn’t so she went up to another platform to try and get a ticket because she didn’t want to get on the train without one.

"She found two Euros in the pocket of her purse and she made the decision to leave Lilly for a few seconds to get a ticket and ran back down the stairs to get it.

"She put the brakes on but in those few seconds a heavy goods train came past and sucked the buggy and Lilly into the side of the train where she hit one of the wagons.

"It killed her instantly.”

A website has since been set up to help raise money for Lilly’s family in the wake of her tragic death.

Mark reveals: "I’m the type of guy who likes to work for his money and doesn’t want to take anything from anybody so it’s incredibly moving for us. Even the local ice hockey team have made a donation of 1,000 Euros which is just amazing.”

The devoted dad is struggling to return to regular life following the horrific tragedy.

He said: “I can’t physically work. I’ve tried but after a few hours I’m just overwhelmed by the emotions or I’m just too tired as I’ve not been sleeping.”
