There were at least three children in the vehicle, along with their mother. Bullets flew through the windows, leaving shattered glass inside the SUV and on the ground.

But, desperate to save the lives of his family, a loyal German Shepherd dog named Noah - who was in the car at the time of the altercation - threw himself between the gun and the children.

Speaking to news site NBC, one witness revealed: "The dog […] jumped in front of the bullet to save one of the children and the wife.

"[He] took the bullet for the kids so the kids would be safe."

The dog, despite being mortally wounded, was seen leaping from the car and chasing his family's attacker down the street.

He later died from his injuries.

Atlanta Police Sgt.Gregory Lyon said: "They were fired upon and their family was terrorised.

"They survived that only to find that their pet is now gone."

On Saturday Kidon Martin, Noah's owner, posted a heartbreaking message to Facebook about the loss of his loyal family dog.

He wrote: "I don't usually come on Facebook, but I have to let people know how my dog Noah saved two members of my family - my wife and my son - from a senseless act of violence.

"Noah sacrificed himself by pushing them away in the line of gunfire and took a bullet to the neck.

"Being so relentless, he chased the assailant's car to show his protective instinct and collapsed in the pursuit.

"He died from the loss of blood."

Kidon, consumed by grief, added: "He will be missed - I cant stop crying for him.

"His name was Noah; a covenant of the Ark, which is my family."

You can read his message on his Facebook page here, but please be aware that Kidon posted a picture of Noah's body after the gunfire attack to accompany the post.

It is every bit as heartbreaking an image as you would imagine.

Rest in peace, Noah.
