The hole, which is about 262 feet wide, was found in the Yamal Peninsula near to Russian gasfields. The depth of the hole remains unknown.

Upon its discovery, the Internet went wild with theories speculating how the hole appeared.

Some wrote online that they suspected aliens, others simply suggested that the hole was the mark of a meteorite or asteroid collision.

The added twist? The translation of 'Yamal', the location in which the hole was discovered, is ‘the end of the world.’

How reassuring.

Luckily, some clever scientists were on hand to offer an explanation behind the appearance of the giant crater.

The hole is what one scientist called a ‘collapsed pingo,’ which is basically a block of ice which has grown undergrown and melted.

The gases released from the melted ice then heat up, causing the massive explosion.

Australian scientist Dr Chris Fogwill says: “We’re seeing much more activity in permafrost areas than we’ve seen in the historical past. A lot of this relates to this high degree of warming around these high arctic areas, which are experiencing some of the highest rates of warming on earth.”

Are you concerned by this massive hole, which seemingly just exploded out of nowhere?
