According to LGBT Collective, a gay rights group in Telangana, Southern India, a teenager was forced to have sex with his own mother in a bid to “cure” him of being gay.
And he is not the only one to have been subjected to this torment.
In another shocking case, a young lesbian was raped by her cousin, while there are further reports that sometimes the victims are raped by their own brother or sister.
These heinous attacks, known as ‘corrective rapes’, are arranged by the victim’s own parents in a misguided attempt to ‘cure’ their children of their homosexuality.
The victims are often left so traumatised that these attacks often go unreported, a spokesman for the LGBT Collective told Times of India.
However they have had at least 15 ‘corrective rapes’ reported to them in the last five years.
Vyjayanti Mogli said: “We are sure there are many more cases, but they go unreported.
“We came across such cases not because they reported the rape, but because they sought help to flee their homes.
“It’s usually a cousin who’s roped in for this project.”
In many areas of India, homosexuality is not just a taboo - it is expressly forbidden.
Gay sex is, in some places, punishable with life in prison.
