The pop star faces 10 charges relating to sex offences against underage girls, and on Monday, a court heard details of one such incident.
According to one of the alleged victims, Gary - real name Paul Gadd, climbed into bed between her and another child and attempted to rape her.
The star was unsuccessful after she wrapped herself in a protective ‘cocoon’ of sheets and blankets, and the ‘drunk’ singer, who apparently smelt strongly of cigarettes and alcohol, gave up.
Although the girl confided in her family and friends about the attack, it was over 20 years until she went to the police, once she heard Glitter had admitted child pornography charges.
Prosecution barrister Mr Price explained this delay: ‘It seemed to her that recent events in Bristol - as she underwood them to be from the publicity - offered a better chance that she might be believed when accusing so famous and popular a man of so dreadful a crime.’
The court was also told of a ‘prolonged episode of sexual abuse’ suffered by a 12-year-old girl at the Holiday Inn in Leicester in the 70s.
An assault on a third girl allegedly took place in the star’s dressing room at a nightclub in Watford.
All of the alleged assaults took place while Glitter was at the height of his fame.
