Elizabeth Smith, a 48 year old woman from California, visited her hair salon in December 2013 and over a week later felt weakness in her left arm and leg.
A week after, Elizabeth suffered a severe stroke.
Speaking to CBS{
The doctors determined that the position of her head in the salon sink was the probable cause of a blood clot leading to Elizabeth’s stroke.
"When a patient is leaning their head back, you could possibly tear or irritate these posterior circulation or have these kind of strokes," neurologist Dr. Clifford Segil said.
Elizabeth described the stroke in a video saying initially she couldn’t walk and couldn’t move her left arm.
The single mother says that two years on from the stoke, she still suffers from dizziness and vision loss.
Doctors have said if she suffers a second stroke, she could die.
Elizabeth is now suing the salon and hopes her story can warn others about the rare condition.
What is Beauty Parlour Syndrome?
The real term is known as Vertebrobasilar Insufficiency, and it basically means there is decreased blood flow in the back of the brain.
There have been instances where tilting your head back far enough (like in a hair salon sink) could be the cause of the clot.
