The LGBT community and gay marriage campaigners are celebrating today after Ireland voted ‘yes’ to gay marriage in a historical referendum.

Irish votes took to the polls yesterday to decide whether gay marriage should become legal in the traditional Catholic country.

As votes started to come in, it was soon clear that the people of Ireland very much want to welcome equal marriage.

John Murray, leader of a religious think tank fighting the law change told the Mail Online this morning: “We did our best to fight a good campaign and if having run that we haven't won it, we did our best.

“Everyone is saying it is Yes and I'm not going to argue with that.”

Bearing in mind that homosexuality was only decriminalised in Irleand in the 1990s, the win is a massive boost for gay rights campaigners.

Senator David Norris, who fought to have homosexuality decriminalised in Ireland, said: “I believe that by the end of today gay people will be equal in this country. I think it's wonderful.

“It's a little bit late for me. As I said the other day I've spent so much time pushing the boat out that I forgot to jump on and now it's out beyond the harbour on the high seas, but it's very nice to look at.”

Something tells us that there might be a lot of newly engaged couples this Bank Holiday weekend!
