“Looking at me, you’d never imagine I was once the victim of domestic violence.
But when I was younger, I fell into a relationship with a mentally and physically abusive man.
Growing up, I’d spent time in an orphanage, and had bad facial eczema, so had very little self-esteem.
When this boyfriend said I was ugly, worthless and I’d provoked him into hitting me, I believed him. Scared and embarrassed, it was only when I confided in friends that I eventually found the courage to walk away.
To start afresh, I got a job as a Police forensic photographer. At the time, I ate unhealthy, stodgy food and didn’t exercise, but then a workmate invited me to a kickboxing class. I loved it. Within weeks I saw a difference. My body shape changed, becoming leaner, toned and incredibly strong. My emotional strength improved too – for the first time, I felt empowered.
Over the next six years I gained two British kickboxing titles, and in 1998, a boxing promoter suggested I box professionally. I gave up my job and qualified to work as a personal trainer between fights. I thrived on competition and tough training, and became World Number Three in the Flyweight division.

I retired in 2007 to be a full-time personal trainer and boxing coach. I love seeing people transform before my eyes. I’ve trained in cognitive behavioural therapy and use this in my work, helping clients become more powerful in every way. One woman recently was in an abusive relationship, and while I desperately wanted to tell her to leave, it had to be her decision. So, I tried to give her the strength and self-confidence she needed. I was so proud when she managed to escape.
Now when people discover I’m 43, they say, ‘No way!’ I’m in great shape – toned, with bags of energy. I respect my body, eating healthily and training six times a week. Five years ago, I also found The One. Greg Williams, now 38, came for a workout in my gym and I asked for his number – something the old me would never have done. He’s kind, generous, and makes me feel special. I feel incredibly lucky. My terrible experience made me who I am today. I hope I’m proof you really can change your body and your life if you work hard. I’ll never let anyone put me down again.”
