Former BBC radio and TV presenter, Claira had the operation in early 2015 at the young age of 28.
Sadly, Claira had already lost her mum to breast cancer when she was only nine years old, and her sister Emily also passed away four years ago, at the age of 31, of the same disease.
After testing positive to the BRCA1 gene mutation herself, Claira made the brave decision to have preventive double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery.
Since the operation, Claira has spread awareness and her personal experiences through various media outlets, and has always tried to promote positive body image, self-confidence and self-love and acceptance.
Claira had previously spent six years building a career as an entertainment presenter and working for several big names including BBC and BT Sport. But after her surgery she realised what she had been working towards no longer made sense to her and she then made the decision to ditch her job and start travelling solo.
“I have spent the last few years feeling like I’m forever waiting for the right job, for the right man, for the right excitement and for the life I have always wanted. I don’t want to wait anymore. I want to get out there experience the world, learn and grow,” she explains in her blog.
Although Claira plans to visit certain parts of the world, she’s asking her followers for ideas of where she should travel to next.
“I will be visiting South, Central, North America, Canada and Alaska. In order to make my trip unique I’m asking for your help. Although the continents and some countries I’m visiting are already decided the rest is up to you. I want to know where, how and who to go visit.”
