It's official; there's a storm brewing just in time for Halloween weekend - meaning there'll be lightning and torrential rain for an added spooky atmosphere.
Forecasters are warning that 90mph winds carrying heavy rain will strike in the coming days, while the Met Office have issued an amber alert (think of it like traffic lights) for wind. There is also concern that heavy rain could cause flooding.
They've warned people to "be prepared for the risk of falling trees as well as damage to buildings and other structures" caused by strong winds. Which really doesn't sound very good - we're guessing this is going to be more than a case of "oh no, my umbrella blew inside out!"
Motorists have been advised against all but essential travel for late Sunday and all of Monday, while worries for power cuts have seen people stocking up on essentials (candles, matches, magazines, chocolate…).
Apparently the storm is formed from two bands of poor weather over the United States, the huge storm is "rapidly intensifying" in the Gulf of Mexico before heading across the Atlantic and "crashing into the UK".
Eddy Carroll, chief forecaster at the Met Office, said: "This storm doesn't exist at the moment, but our forecasts models predict it is likely to develop in the west Atlantic on Saturday."
"Then it's likely to rapidly intensify just west of the UK late on Sunday before tracking across England and Wales early on Monday."
However, he did add that "there is still a chance this storm may take a more southerly track and miss the UK, bringing impacts elsewhere in northern Europe, but people should be aware there is a risk of severe weather and significant disruption." Which would mean that these warnings are all a case of the media getting a tad over-excited...
Just in case the storm DOES hit, we want all of our Closerettes stay safe; stay indoors with a cup of tea and get stuck into some of our great online articles. Now THAT'S a blissful way to see out a storm...
