Then this year, the pair were finally given the clean slate they had been looking for, after Italy’s Supreme Court said that the case against the couple showed ‘stunning flaws,’ including a complete lack of biological evidence.

But despite now having their innocence returned to them, Amanda and Raffaele are still not welcome at Meredith’s grave, according to her sister Stephanie.

‘We are a family destroyed by pain that is trying to find a way to keep going and remember Meredith,’ she said.

‘The hardest thing we have had to face that there will no conclusion, not having a definitive ending to this tragedy.’

Stephanie added there was ‘no reason or need’ for Meredith to come and meet with her family, or pray at her grave.

‘For us it is a place to meet and remember the happy moments that we spent with her. To go against our personal wishes would be disrespectful and unacceptable. Meredith should have at least the right to rest in peace finally.’

Stephanie also spoke of the difficulty the family have in understanding how, eight years later, they are no closer to the truth of what happened to their beloved Meredith.
