The McLarty family from Michigan had adopted three-month-old husky mix Hunter just two weeks before when the dog decided to repay his debt to the couple.
The pair were awoken at about midnight by Hunter wailing and barking, which they thought meant he needed to go out.
But when Hunter re-entered the house he continued to whine, even jumping up on the bed and gnawing on Jill McLarty's arm.
When he eventually pulled her out of bed, Jill said she found him doing circles in the hallway and then sitting next to the stove and crying.
'My wife turned on the light and she saw not only was the stove turned on, but at that instant she smelled gas,' said Tim.
The pair determined that the gas must've been on for six hours, as they had cooked dinner earlier that evening.
Tim McLarty was also suffering with a bad cold at the time, and so said he never would've smelt the gas.
The couple credit Hunter with saving their lives, as the build up of gas if had continued could've been deadly.
'It sounds cliche, but you never know, the life you save may save yours,' said Tim.
The couple almost adopted Hunter's brother when they first attended the animal shelter, but Hunter's face ended up winning them over.
We bet that's a decision they won't be regretting!
