Kayla Mendoza was drunk behind the wheel when she drove her car the wrong way down the freeway, killing Kaitlyn Ferrante and her best friend Marisa Catronio.

Shockingly, just hours before she got in her car Mendoza had tweeted she was ‘2 drunk 2 care’ - something which was used in evidence against her.

The then 20-year-old was driving at around 90 miles an hour when she smashed into another vehicle, that was driving the correct way along the road.

Kaitlyn and Marisa died in the accident

Her two passengers, 21-year-olds Kaitlyn and Marisa, were both killed.

Speaking to the court, the families of the two teenage victims urged the judge to pass the maximum sentence of 30 years.

‘You took all those dreams away’ said Ferrante’s mother, who had to make the heartbreaking decision of pulling her daughter off life support following the horror smash.

‘That’s something a mother should never have to do.’

‘No matter how much time passes they will never leave my heart. I think about them every day and I regret my choices every day.’

Before she was sentenced to 24 years in prison, Mendoza addressed the court, saying: ‘No matter how much time passes they will never leave my heart. I think about them every day and I regret my choices every day.’

Do you think this was a fair sentencing? Do you think there should be harsher penalties for drink drivers in this country?
