If you're heading off for some winter sun this Christmas, we're VERY jealous. Because here in the UK, it's set to be the coldest winter in over 50 years!
In 1963 the temperature dropped to -19.4C, 20-feet of snow fell in some parts of the country, and some folk were left without electricity. It was previously reported that this winter was going to be the coldest in five years and that the bad weather would last from November until February 2017, but now weather experts are predicting the winter could be even harsher than they originally thought, with temperatures dropping to -20 in some parts of the country.
Eek!
Obviously, this is all good news if you're dreaming of a white Christmas, as it's looking VERY likely that this'll be the first white Christmas since 2010.
Piers Corbyn, forecaster for WeatherAction, revealed there's a 90 per cent chance of snow across Scotland and the north east and between 50 and 70 per cent everywhere else. He told The Express: "We expect snow showers, blizzards and thunder snow at times in Scotland, the north and the Midlands over the Christmas period threatening major road and air travel disruption.
"Christmas Day could well see major blizzards over land with storms out to sea which could reach hurricane force. Through to the end of December we expect further blizzards and bitter winds in Scotland and northern England."
And according to Exacta Weather's James Madden, the snow could last into the new year: "December is now likely to follow a cold and snowy weather pattern across many parts of the country.
"Colder conditions will be accompanied by potentially countrywide snow events particularly around the periods of the 12th to the 17th and the 21st to the 29th of December.
"Over the next few weeks there is a very high risk for snow event after snow event across the country, with temperatures dipping as low or exceeding -20C."
