I’ve been advised to have a hysterectomy by my gynaecologist, but am worried it will affect my orgasms. I have a great sex life, and my husband and I are concerned this might change things. Will it? Ruth, by email

The best predictor for a woman’s sex life, post-hysterectomy, is what it was like before surgery. So in your case the news is good! Research shows that if you don’t expect sex or desire to be different post-surgery, it usually isn’t. What you may find is that orgasms feel different initially. Women who feel their uterus contract on orgasm say the feelings were less intense until they got used to what was the new “norm.” Contractions

are felt in other areas though, so it shouldn’t make a great deal of difference.
