My new boyfriend’s family are lovely but he talks to his mother around five times a day and his sister at least a couple of times. They’re nice to me, but it feels like they’re intruding all the time. Should I say something? Pip, by email

Give it a bit of time to get to know him and them. It’s nice that he’s close to his family and it’s not like they aren’t welcoming you. If it’s just a few phone calls and that’s what the family have always done, you might learn to live with it. What is acceptable, though, is to ask him to turn off the phone (or put it on silent) during certain times with you.
