X Factor presenter Olly Murs has opened up about the moment he accidentally announced Monica Michael was leaving the show, when in fact it had come to a deadlock.

The 31-year-old appeared on Chatty Man, which airs tonight, telling Alan Carr:

"I pulled a face as if to say, 'I think I am not going to come back next week… P45.'

"As I was a contestant I know how tense it is. If that had happened to me I probably would have chinned Dermot."

And going on Twitter immediately after the slip-up only made things worse.

"I went on Twitter for two seconds and threw my phone. I got a massive crack. But you can't listen to that rubbish," the singer admitted.

Olly's interview comes as sources told the Mirror that Simon Cowell has hit Olly and Caroline Flack with a phone ban.

The source said: “Cowell wants Olly and Caroline to focus on the task at hand. He told Olly he has his complete support, as he wants to boost his confidence.

“Reading negative comments is not going to do anything except make them feel more nervous, so he has told them to leave their phones until after the show."

Aw Olly, I'm sure we can forgive you!
