Who killed Lucy Beale? More and more people are suggesting it might be Jane following last night's episode…

Sole remaining original cast member Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale, has said the moving story will be as good as popular dramas.

Last night's episode saw Jane break down under the guilt of cheating on Masood with her ex-husband Ian Beale. Ew.

But there were several telling moments where she seemed to imply that there was much more to her sense of guilt than met the eye...

Shabnam reassured Jane: "If it helps, in my faith we believe that God will have mercy on Lucy and welcome her to heaven."

"The Beales suddenly realise that actually the killer is amongst them"

To which Jane responded: "He forgives all of us, does He? Well, I don't really feel that I deserve that right now."

Later she added, after confessing to her affair (or so we assume, as were not there for her speech): "I've made such a mess of things… still think God will forgive me?

And Shabnam slowly responded, off-camera: "That's the deal He makes, so yes."

Let's think this through...

Firstly, Jane Beale was NOT one of the family to leave a message on Lucy's phone that fateful night, despite usually being the mediator of the situation.

Does that mean she'd already tried to calm Lucy down - and failed? Badly?

Secondly, when Jane found the police woman's calling card on the table, she seemed to know that something terrible had happened straight away. Unlike Denise, who clung to optimism, Jane stood by the window and waited for Ian's return…

There's also the fact that she's left Albert Square, with little Bobby, and returned back to wherever it is she lives when she's not in Walford.

Speaking at a recent press launch about her career plans, actress Laurie Brett revealed that she is set to resume filming on schools drama Waterloo Road but will return to EastEnders later in the year:

"I'm on screen until the funeral and then I do have a job commitment, but then I will be back in September once I've finished at Waterloo Road," she said.

Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins added that Brett's return would then be "permanent".

The executive producer also revealed: "We decided that the story would be about grief at first, but then slowly get closer and closer, until the focus goes onto the Square and the Beales suddenly realising that actually the killer is amongst them."

"In the run-up towards Christmas time, there's going to be a big twist that will make everyone gasp. That's all I'm going to say!"
