We all thought that Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) would be the one to wreak vengeance upon rapist Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) this Christmas 2015.
But it seems as if it will be none other than soap villainess Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack) who sets the deadly wheels in motion.
Oh yes.
Soap boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins explained that Ronnie will become increasingly frustrated when she feels that she is losing her sister Roxy (Rita Simons) to the Blades hairdresser.
And, as Dean gives into his dark side and becomes more and more abusive, Ronnie - afraid for her beloved little sister - quickly comes up with a plan.
Dominic said: "Ronnie sees her sister with this man she knows is bad. We're going to rip Roxy and Ronnie apart a bit. What I think is exciting is bringing Ronnie into the arena with the Carters.
“Ultimately, neither Ronnie nor Mick wants Dean in Walford, and Ronnie is saying, ‘Come on, we shouldn’t have Dean around anymore’.
"It is hard that Dean's still around, and I know we've had criticism, but these things aren't just tied up. It's the same with the Beales and Bobby - you can't play out the big whodunit and have the next scene be Ian and Jane sat choosing curtains. That's boring.
"In reality, Mick and Linda would have to get on with their life with Dean across the road. We have storylined the climax to that for the end of the year."
Mick has already been tipped for a water-based stunt in the New Year, when his family's storyline with Dean is expected to come to a head.
Does this mean that Ronnie is the one who orchestrates Dean’s watery demise? And that, for reasons unknown, Mick leaps into the waters to save his twisted brother?
It has been one year since Dean raped Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) at the Queen Vic. He is still yet to face punishment for his actions after the authorities failed to pursue the case against him.
Matt Di Angelo, who plays Dean, returned to EastEnders in early 2014 on a one-year contract.
He later signed another 12-month deal, keeping Dean on the Square for a while yet.
